It’s nothing short of a miracle that the Christian faith and the Christian church has continued as long as it has with an order that has been passed on through time and maintains coherence – not just coherence but rich life within many countries, particularly countries that become authoritarian and totalitarian.
I read recently that the church in China is one of the fastest-growing and most important forces in that culture. This shouldn’t surprise us. I remember years ago Malcolm Muggeridge telling me that the biggest mistake the Soviets made was not banning the works of Tolstoy and other Christian writers because in those works, the spiritual, the religious insights of the Christian faith were manifest in narrative form that, in a sense, witnessed to their times through story.
