By our standards, the ancient world was very violent. We tend to rate our movies R or PG13. The ancient world had public executions; they had public beatings. There were beatings in the schools, with the schoolchildren being beaten by their teachers. Violence was everywhere. What we would call domestic violence was rampant, although they didn’t identify it as such. Just a very high level of violence in the ancient world. This is what people lived with.
